Here we are at #0007 on the PS2POCALYPSE, Rygar: The Legendary Adventure. Tecmo is really good at making games that get covered by time and dust. This game is a prime example of exactly that. This game is way better than the first God of War if you ask me. The story may not be the same but the premise definitely is.
Unraveling the Myth: A Critical Review of Rygar: The Legendary Adventure – The Negative Press– This is the link to what the AI thinks about this game, now we can jump into what I think about this game.
There are no codes for this game, just things that add replay-ability to the game as unlockables at the end.
Tecmo has brought many classic games to the table over the years that either get ripped off or just plain forgotten. This is an example of both. Rygar: The Legendary Adventure is a sequel to the 1987 game Rygar for NES. With very destructive environments and high detail cutscenes, I would much rather play this than God of War, despite not much gore, but there is still shock and horror around the corners that lay in wait for your arrival.
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure Story
Basically, this is a typical Greek hero story. Rygar is about to be honored for his deeds done in the 1987 NES game and some asshole titans decide they ain’t having that. Rygar’s girl gets kidnapped and Rygar is told, homie you better stop these fucking Titans and protect the land of Argus from their destruction and bitch smack that girl Echidna twice for me.
As we set forth into a journey to rescue Harmonia, we go about kicking some serious ass on these Titans that must not of learned their lesson the first time, you don’t fuck with Rygar.
The one giant thing about the story of this game that is quite humorous to me is the fact that this all takes place on a small island. The gods have returned and are only here to fuck with this small island… that is a generous tid-bit of Greek Mythology that makes this game feel like a true Greek legend as that is how they all go, yeah sure it happened… its not like anyone else was there to say otherwise.
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure Story 7/10
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure Gameplay
In this game, we wield a diskarmor, kick ass, move on to the next section, kill a boss, unlock a new ability and keep on moving on. This game laid down the architecture of games of its vein quite early on. Don’t expect complexity, just expect to enjoy playing it. This is not a boring game.
The detail of some of the bosses is quite gnarly. There is a dragon boss fight at the end, I cannot place the name of the boss right now but if you watch the videos on these located at the bottom of the review you will see eventually what boss I am talking about, that is a hydra type boss with full grown babies as it’s heads. That is some straight up death metal album art shit. It is some nightmare fuel. The main reason I bring up this boss fight is the fact that, that is the true difficulty curve of the game. The game is simple and straight up until that fight, when moving on to the final boss dungeon and the final boss, that is when the game becomes truly challenging.
You are presented with a type of map in the game, but only certain sections have minimaps. You have a full world map you can view in the start screen if you get lost, it somewhat marks what you are supposed to do, but you can get lost quite easily if you allow yourself too. You will more than likely pass your objective a few times.
My favorite part of this game is the fact that though there is some insane platforming sections, you do not die or lose health if you fuck up and trust me you will fuck up. You just respawn. It is quite fair.
This game is a simple premise with a dope weapon, cool bosses and overall badass scenery.
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure Gameplay 8/10
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure Difficulty
Much like the game played prior to this, Maximo vs the Army of Zin, the difficulty curve comes at the end. For the most part the game is not truly challenging. Everything kind of balances itself out. Until the last two boss fights, for the fact of how strategic you have to play the final fights I will have to give this game an 8 in the difficulty department.
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure Difficulty 8/10
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure Graphics
Dude. This game gets a 10 here. If you are not impressed with the depth of the stunning detail and effects used in the cutscenes, just get to the sky. When you get to the sky you will know what I am talking about. That part is so god damn awesome.
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure Graphics 10/10
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure Controls
So, a minor gripe with this game is the camera. Even if it is clear the entire time what is to be done at most times… that camera really restricts you ability to see the thing you are supposed to do as you cannot move it. Fixed cameras suck.
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure Controls 7/10
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure Sound
The soundtrack is great but not memorably great, there aren’t many stand out parts of the OST and the voice acting once again is just there.
Rygar: The Legendary Adventure Sound 7/10
The AI gave this game a 61%, I give it
